Police Officer Arrested After His Car is Found Crashed into Concrete Barrier
A police officer was arrested in connection with a DUI incident that occurred earlier in the morning. According to arresting documents, the suspect’s Chevy Camero was spotted crashed into a concrete barrier on the westbound Hypoluxo Road overpass of Interstate 95. Earlier that morning, the vehicle had been reported swerving across lanes on the I-95 heading northbound.
When a Florida Highway Patrol officer approached the vehicle, the suspect was in the driver’s seat of the car and appeared to be dazed by the impact. The trooper checked in on the suspect and asked him if he needed fire rescue. The suspect declined. According to the report, when the suspect exited the vehicle, he “stumbled while doing so, almost falling to the ground.” According to the arrest report, the suspect had difficulty keeping his balance while walking and was emitting the smell of alcohol. According to the suspect, he lost control of his vehicle while exiting I-95 southbound which led to the collision with the concrete barrier.
When the arresting officer informed the suspect that they were going to conduct a criminal investigation for driving under the influence, the suspect declined to speak with the trooper. When asked to take a field sobriety test, the suspect refused. When placed under arrest by the arresting officer, the suspect flashed his deputy identification card. The trooper advised the suspect that he needed to place his hands behind his back. The suspect was then transported to the Palm Beach County Breath Alcohol Testing Facility. The suspect allegedly threatened violence against the arresting officer when the trooper tried to get him out of the vehicle.
The suspect remained uncooperative with police and “pulled away” from the trooper on several occasions. When asked to provide a breath sample, the suspect remained silent. The arresting officer explained that his silence would be interpreted as a refusal to provide a breath sample.
The suspect was then taken to a local hospital for medical clearance. After he was medically cleared, he was booked at Palm Beach County Jail. He has since been placed on administrative leave with pay. He has been charged with DUI, reckless driving, assault on a law enforcement officer, and failure to obey a law enforcement officer.
