Tiger Woods Arrested on DUI Charges in Jupiter Florida

DUI2

Tiger Woods was arrested recently on a DUI charge in Jupiter, Florida. He spent nearly four hours in a county jail before he was released. Woods is a 14-time major champion who ranks second overall with 79 career victories on the PGA Tour. He has not golfed, however, in four months. He is out the rest of the season while he recovers from a fourth back surgery.

Woods was arrested on suspicion of DUI at about 3 a.m. in a suburban area. He was later taken to Palm Beach County jail, a Jupiter Police spokesperson said. He was arrested on Military Trail, south of Indian Creek Parkway.

Jail records show that the 41-year-old golfing great was booked into Palm Beach County jail at 7:18 a.m. and released on his own recognizance at 10:50 a.m.

DUI arrests in Florida

It’s unclear whether Woods was arrested for alcohol or drugs. We know that Woods has had a recent back surgery for which he could be taking prescription opioids. If he was found under the influence of these opioids, he could face charges for DUI even if he wasn’t drunk and had a lawful prescription for the pills.

If he was under the influence of alcohol, some counties have a breath test machine set up in the back of a police SUV. They come out to the scene of DUI to do breath tests on the driver. It’s important to note that you have to be under arrest before the police can even ask you to submit to a breath test. So the police need to have probable cause that you are under the influence at the time of the breath test.

In Florida, if you are arrested for DUI, you’re likely going to spend the next eight hours in jail before the police are willing to release you. Florida statutes state that if you blow over a .08, police have to hold you for eight hours or until your breath level is below .02. Many police interpret this to mean that if you’re arrested for DUI, they have to hold you for eight hours. They generally won’t give a suspect repeated breath tests until their BAC goes below .02.

However, DUI is a bondable offense. Bonds on a first offense DUI range from $100 to $750. If you can afford to bond out, you should bond out. The alternative is that you go before a judge. In most cases, the judge will place you on supervised pretrial release instead of a bond. This tends to be extremely intrusive and it lasts for the next 6 months. It’s generally something you want to avoid.
